Short answer
It depends on who does the analysis. If you want to be told what to change, Shopsicle is built for that: it investigates on its own, ties each finding to the product, variant and stock involved, says how sure it is, and checks back after you act. If you want recordings to analyze yourself: Clarity is free, Lucky Orange is the most Shopify-native, Contentsquare goes deepest, Mouseflow is strong on forms, Crazy Egg adds A/B tests.
Key takeaways
- All six record sessions. What separates them is what happens next, and who has to do the thinking.
- Shopsicle is built to investigate without being asked and tie every finding to your catalog: product, variant, stock, price.
- Every Shopsicle finding says how sure it is, what else could explain it and how to check, then Shopsicle follows up after you act.
- None of the other five list catalog context, confidence levels or follow-up after a change on their own pages.
We make Shopsicle, so we list it first. The table below only compares what happens after the recording: who investigates, how findings connect to your products, and what happens once you act. Facts about the other apps come from their own product, AI and help pages and their Shopify App Store listings, checked on September 30, 2026, and linked in Sources.

1. Shopsicle: best if you want to be told what to change
Shopsicle is built as an investigator, not a viewer. Recordings are the evidence it cites, not the work it hands you. Five things set it apart from every other app on this list:
- It investigates without being asked. Most AI in this category answers when you ask: Microsoft describes Copilot as a way to “ask questions” and summarize the session you open (Clarity Copilot). Shopsicle is built to run on its own across all your eligible sessions and bring you the few things worth your time, ranked.
- It knows your catalog, not just your pages. Recording tools see clicks on a page. Shopsicle is built to see what was on that page for that shopper: the product, the variant they picked, whether it was in stock, the price. So a finding can point to a sold-out size, a variant with no photo or a price change on one product, instead of “people leave the product page”.
- It shows its work. Every finding is designed to state how sure it is, what else could explain the pattern, and how to check it. Microsoft itself notes that Copilot can misinterpret data (Clarity Copilot), and none of the AI features compared here list a confidence level.
- It checks back after you act. Mark a finding as done and Shopsicle is built to keep watching that step and those shoppers, then tell you what the evidence shows, with a before and after labeled as a hint, not as proof.
- It learns from you. Dismiss a finding with a reason (“we already have a size chart”) and the next investigation is designed to use it, so you don’t get the same generic advice twice.
It’s also built to find what already works (the source, product or path your best shoppers take) so you can do more of it, and it never changes your store: it recommends, you decide.
2. Microsoft Clarity: best free recording tool
Clarity is free: Microsoft says you “never encounter traffic limits or are compelled to upgrade”, with up to 100,000 sessions recorded per project per day (Clarity FAQ). Its official Shopify app has the Built for Shopify badge (Shopify App Store). You get recordings, heatmaps, funnels, and Copilot for chat and session summaries (Copilot).
Where it stops: Copilot works when you ask or open a session, and Microsoft’s docs don’t describe catalog context, confidence levels or follow-up after a change. Shopsicle is built to go further: to investigate on its own and bring you ranked findings tied to your products, with its confidence and a way to check.
3. Lucky Orange: best Shopify-native recording toolkit
A Built for Shopify app with recordings, heatmaps, surveys, live chat and funnels, with a free tier (100 sessions a month) and paid plans from $19/month for 500 sessions (Shopify App Store). Its Discovery AI “reads your live behavioral data and responds with a plain-language answer”, with links to the recordings behind it (Lucky Orange).
Where it stops: Discovery works from behavior on pages; Lucky Orange doesn’t list connecting it to variants, stock or price, stating confidence, or following up after you make a change. Shopsicle is built to go further: a finding names the product and variant involved and whether it was in stock, and after you act it keeps watching that step to tell you what the evidence shows.
4. Contentsquare (formerly Hotjar): best for teams with analysts
Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and new customers sign up to Contentsquare (Hotjar). Its Shopify app lists a free plan of up to 20k monthly sessions and Growth plans from $49/month for 7k sessions with Sense AI (Shopify App Store); Contentsquare’s blog describes a larger free allowance, so check at sign-up (Contentsquare). Its Sense Analyst agent, announced in beta, gives teams a prioritized list of recommendations (Contentsquare).
Where it stops: it’s a full analytics suite built for teams, replay on checkout needs Shopify Plus (Contentsquare Help), and Contentsquare doesn’t list catalog context, confidence levels or learning from dismissed recommendations. Shopsicle is built to go further: for the merchant without an analyst, learning from every finding you dismiss with a reason.
5. Mouseflow: best for forms and friction
Free for 500 sessions a month, paid plans from $25/month for 5,000 (Mouseflow pricing). Strong on form analytics and friction detection, with Mina AI, which links insights to the sessions behind them (Mouseflow AI). There’s no official Mouseflow Shopify app: you add a script to your theme (Mouseflow Help).
Where it stops: Mina analyzes pages and forms; Mouseflow doesn’t list catalog context, confidence levels or follow-up after a change. Shopsicle is built to go further: to investigate a store as a store, from traffic source to product to order, and say how sure it is.
6. Crazy Egg: best if you already know what to test
Heatmaps, recordings and built-in A/B tests, with plans from $29/month billed annually; the free plan covers heatmaps only (Crazy Egg pricing). Its AI analysis reviews recordings and suggests which ones to watch (Crazy Egg).
Where it stops: an A/B test is only as good as its hypothesis, and choosing one is left to you. Shopsicle is built to go further: every finding is designed to come with the hypothesis, what else could explain it, and how to check it, which is exactly what a good test needs.
How to choose
- You want to be told what to change, tied to your products, and checked after you act: Shopsicle.
- You want free recordings to watch yourself: Microsoft Clarity.
- You want one Shopify-native toolkit with chat and surveys: Lucky Orange.
- You have an analyst or a CRO agency: Contentsquare.
- Forms are your main problem: Mouseflow.
- You already know what to test: Crazy Egg.
Whatever you pick, start by finding the step where shoppers stop. Shopify traffic but no sales shows how with the reports you already have.
Questions
- What’s the difference between Shopsicle and a session recording app?
- A recording app gives you sessions, heatmaps and, increasingly, AI answers about them. Shopsicle is built to do the investigation itself: it ranks findings about your store, ties each to the product and variant involved, says how sure it is, and follows up after you make a change.
- What is the best free session recording app for Shopify?
- Microsoft Clarity. It’s free with no traffic limits and has an official Built for Shopify app (Shopify App Store).
- Is Hotjar still available for Shopify?
- Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and new customers sign up to Contentsquare, which has its own Shopify app (Hotjar).
- Do AI features in recording tools tell you what to change?
- Some suggest fixes, mostly when you ask. None of the tools compared here list a confidence level, catalog context (variant, stock, price) or follow-up after you act, which is what Shopsicle is built around.
- Will these apps slow down my store?
- Any script adds some work for the browser. Check Shopify’s Web performance reports before and after installing, and remove tools you don’t use.
