Mobile converts worse than desktop: how to find out why on your Shopify store

Some gap between phone and desktop is normal. A gap at one specific step is a problem you can find and fix.

Short answer

Mobile converts lower than desktop almost everywhere, partly because people browse on phones and buy later on a computer. The gap becomes a problem when phones fall far behind at one step, like adding to cart or finishing checkout. Split Shopify’s funnel by device, find that step, and test it on a real phone.

Key takeaways

  • Expect a gap: phones carry most browsing, and some buyers finish on desktop.
  • The useful question is where phones fall behind, not by how much overall.
  • Mobile speed, above-the-fold layout and typing effort are the usual causes.
  • Test on a mid-range phone on mobile data, not on a fast laptop with a narrow window.

Contentsquare’s 2026 benchmarks, as reported by Shopify, put average ecommerce conversion at 3.4% on desktop and 2% on mobile, even though mobile made up 70% of ecommerce traffic (Shopify: Mobile vs desktop conversion rates). So a gap on your store is expected. What you want to know is whether your gap is normal browsing behavior or a specific thing phones struggle with.

Measure the gap on your store

Start with Sessions by device in Shopify Analytics to see how your traffic splits. Then read the Conversion rate breakdown with a device type filter, once for mobile and once for desktop, and compute the three step rates for each:

Session → cartyour rateyour rateProduct page layout, speed, variant picker, images
Cart → checkoutyour rateyour rateCart drawer usability, shipping surprise, button position
Checkout → orderyour rateyour rateTyping effort, express payment options, form errors

The step with the biggest relative gap is where phones struggle. If every step is a little lower on mobile, you’re likely seeing normal browse-now-buy-later behavior.

Speed hits phones hardest

Phones have slower processors and often slower connections, so heavy themes, large images and many apps hurt them first. Shopify’s Web performance reports show LCP, INP and CLS from real visits, and you can filter them by device type. Shopify rates LCP up to 2,500 ms, INP up to 200 ms and CLS up to 0.1 as good.

The link between speed and buying is well documented. In a Google-commissioned Deloitte study of 37 brands, a 0.1 second improvement in mobile site speed came with a 9.1% increase in retail shoppers progressing from product page to add-to-basket (web.dev).

What a phone shows first

On desktop, the image, price and button sit side by side. On a phone they stack, and themes often put a tall image gallery first. Open your top product page on a phone and check what’s visible before any scroll: the product, the price, and a clear way to choose a variant and add to cart.

Typing and tapping cost more on a phone

  • Small tap targets: variant swatches and quantity buttons that are hard to hit lead to wrong selections and frustration.
  • Forms: every required checkout field is more effort on a phone keyboard. Make optional fields optional.
  • Express payment: wallets and accelerated checkouts let returning shoppers skip typing entirely. Check which are turned on.
  • Overlays: chat bubbles, cookie bars and pop-ups cover much more of a small screen.

Test like a real mobile shopper

  1. Use a real, mid-range phone

Not a desktop browser with a narrow window. Turn Wi-Fi off and use mobile data.

  2. Arrive the way shoppers do

Tap through from the same ad, post or email your mobile visitors use most.

  3. Buy something

Pick a product with variants, add it, open the cart, go through checkout to the payment step.

  4. Write down every hesitation

Each moment you had to zoom, scroll back or think is a candidate cause. Then watch a few recordings of real mobile sessions at the weak step to confirm.

Questions

Why is my Shopify mobile conversion rate so low?
Part of the gap is normal: people browse on phones and often buy later. A large gap at one step usually comes from slow mobile pages, a product page that hides the price or button, a hard-to-use cart drawer, or a checkout with too much typing.
What is a normal gap between mobile and desktop conversion?
Contentsquare’s 2026 benchmarks (reported by Shopify) put desktop at 3.4% and mobile at 2% on average (Shopify). Your own step-by-step comparison is more useful than any average.
Where do I see conversion by device in Shopify?
Use the Sessions by device report and apply a device type filter to the Conversion rate breakdown and web performance reports in Shopify Analytics.
